She did not hear the footsteps approaching from behind until a rough, smelly hand clamped over her mouth.
Instinctively Moon Hawk began to struggle, kicking, twisting and clawing. But more hands seized her, jerking her off balance. Her head struck a jutting rock, stunning her for a few precious seconds. When her vision cleared, she found herself securely pinned to the boulders, with two grinning, bewhiskered faces leering down at her.
“Well, now, what we got here, eh?” The dark, fleshy man held her left wrist in one hand while the other hand covered her mouth. He reeked of stale tobacco, and his voice was a nasal whine. “My gawd, Ike, it’s a white woman! An” a purty one at that!”
“Glory be, is this our lucky day or what?” the smaller, thinner man chuckled. “Think we oughta save her for the others or take our turns here and now?”
“Hank told us to sneak in and bushwhack that sonofabitch with the rifle,” the first man said. “He’ll be madder’n a riled skunk if’n we don’t do that first.”
Ike’s wiry fingers tightened painfully around Moon Hawk’s left wrist. Forcing herself to remain calm, she lay quietly, gathering her strength for the chance to catch the men off guard.
“If you ask me, Hank’s been gittin” too big for his britches lately. I say we have our fun now and let him worry about the rifle. Maybe if we git lucky, they’ll shoot each other.”
“An” if we don’t, Hank’ll have our balls for supper. We can’t have it both ways, Ike.”
The small man’s eyes narrowed thoughtfully. Then he broke into a broad grin, revealing a line of yellow, rotting teeth. “Who the hell says we can’t? We’ll stick it to “er and let “er squeal. If that don’t bring the bastard out of where he’s holed, nothin” will! When he comes chargin” to the rescue we’ll just plug “im between the eyes and finish what we started. How’s that for a plan?”
A sickening weight stirred in Moon Hawk’s stomach. She imagined Etonéto hearing her cries and racing to help her, as he surely would. In her mind’s eye, she saw the bullet strike, saw him stagger and fall.
Whatever happened, whatever these filthy beasts did to her, she could not allow herself to make a sound. Not if she wanted Etonéto to live.
The big man chuckled as he removed his hand from Moon Hawk’s mouth. “Hell, you’s a right smart one, Ike! You shoulda been a schoolmaster.” His greasy fist caught the hem of her long, fringed shirt and flipped it up over her bare thighs. “Lawse,” he breathed, “I ain’t seen pussy that color since we went on the run. I’m hard as an anvil already. Come on, help me tie “er hands. I’ll butter the bun while you keep a lookout for her friend out there. Then we can trade off.”
